Sustainability of folding boxes

A folding box is a very sustainable packaging solution. Folding boxes are made from cardboard, which in turn is produced from various fresh and recycled fibres. The raw materials for this come largely from certified sustainable forestry, which focuses on compliance with applicable laws, good working conditions and sustainable forest management. The raw materials also come largely from Germany and Europe.

Other factors influencing the sustainability of folding boxes are:

  • The recyclability of the materials and finishes used
  • The upcycling possibilities of folding boxes
  • The manufacturing conditions (origin of electricity / optimisation of production processes)
  • The origin of the folding boxes and the length of the shipping routes
Per capita consumption of cardboard, paper and paperboard in Germany was 211.6 kilograms in 2022. The waste paper return rate in the same year was 74%, of which 95.4% could be recycled. Paper, cardboard and paperboard thus have one of the highest recycling rates in Germany. Folding boxboard also has a waste paper utilisation rate of 85-92%. (Source: Federal Environment Agency)
