Frequently asked questions

Which materials are recyclable and are there recycling certificates?
Some of our materials are fully recyclable and can be disposed of either via the yellow bag (for plastic) or the blue/green garbage can (for waste paper). The recyclability of our materials is confirmed by the Cyclos-HTP institute. Conformity with the following standards is also certified:

  • Minimum standard for assessing the recyclability of the ZSVR (German Central Agency Packaging Register).
  • DIN EN 13430 with regard to recyclability in the post-consumer phase.

What is the smallest size available for Flat Pouches?

Our online calculator offers a wide range of options for flat pouches, but not all combinations can be covered online. The minimum size varies depending on whether a zipper is to be integrated into the pouch or not. Contact our customer service for a quote outside of our online options.

Minimum size stand-up pouch:

  • Flat pouch without zipper: 57 mm x 70 mm (width x height)
  • Flat pouch with zip: 70 mm x 100 mm (width x height)
What pouch materials are offered and what barrier do they provide?
We offer a variety of materials for our pouches, including mono-materials, paper/plastic composites, and plastic-free barrier papers. Each material offers specific protective properties that meet the requirements of different products. Additionally, our materials are available in various options, including white, transparent, metallic, and paper look. Moreover, we offer different surfaces, such as matte or glossy film.

All our materials contain a functional barrier, which consists of either EVOH, AlOx, or aluminum. This barrier protects the content from loss of aroma, the penetration of oxygen, moisture, and possibly UV radiation. Furthermore, our materials are certified recyclable depending on the composite.

How can I create a custom window for my pouch?

To create an individual window for your pouch, use a transparent film and choose the color "4/0-colored + white". The additional white ensures that printed surfaces appear colorful and opaque by being printed as opaque white under the printed design. This means that unprinted areas remain transparent and serve as a window. For a highly transparent window, we recommend a glossy surface material. A matt surface material makes the window appear milky. For more information on how to properly design with opaque white, see our print data guide for flexible packaging. Our media designers will be happy to answer any questions you may have at any time.

Aufbau Druckdaten Sichtfenster

Step by step instructions:

  • Step 1: Download the appropriate print template for your pouch from our online shop. Then create the desired design in a suitable graphics program. We recommend for example Adobe Illustrator.
  • Step 2: Create a new solid color called “HPI-White”. Then add all the elements that should be printed in white. You must then set all overlying elements of your design to “Overprint area”.
  • Step 3: Save the finished print file as a PDF document and upload the document to the shopping cart under "Print data".
You can find out more about creating the print data for your pouch in our print data instructions for flexible packaging.
Aufbau Druckdatei für Sichtfenster
What is the actual fill level for my bag?
Depending on which additional components (zippers, tear tabs, and hangers) you choose, the actual fill height of your bag will differ from the height in the calculator. Please consider the following dimensions when configuring your bag packaging:
  • Distance top edge to zipper:
40 mm
  • Distance top edge to tear flap:
21 mm
  • Distance top edge to Euro hole / hole suspension:
16 mm
What foods can I put in the pouches?
All our pouches materials meet the high requirements for the following barriers:
  • Oxygen barrier
  • Water vapor barrier
  • Aroma barrier

Therefore, you can fill the following foods into your desired pouch:
  • Pastes
  • powders
  • Liquids
  • Capsules
Each product is unique and often subject to special legal requirements. Depending on the product, we recommend lab tests specific to the filling material. If you need declarations of conformity or other documents, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Strong lightness – PE bags as product packaging

Printed stand up pouch made out of PE

Small screws, natural herbs and high-quality care products: Stand up Pouches are extremely popular as transparent, white or custom-printed packaging. With their enormous lightness, impressive flexibility and high resistance, they are used in a variety of ways in numerous industries, from the food industry to the pharmaceutical sector. Discover the advantages of PE bags with Packaging Warehouse, your reliable partner for customised packaging solutions.

What is a PE bag?

A PE bag is a versatile product packaging made from robust, flexible and extremely durable polyethylene (PE) plastic. Compared to other widely used plastics such as PP, this material is characterised by its soft feel and practical flexibility. A direct comparison of the two materials shows that PP is rather hard and inflexible, while PE is the perfect material for small or large, flat or voluminous bags.

PE bags are typically completely transparent – a clear advantage if you want the contents of your bag to be visible from the outside. This feature is valued not only in logistics, but also by end consumers, as a transparent bag allows the contents and fill quantity to be seen at a glance. PE bags are also available in an almost opaque white colour. Special additives are added to these variants during the production process, which are responsible for the white colouring.

PE bags are so versatile: an overview of the different types

Transparent PE bags

Polyethylene (PE) is the standard material for bags in the packaging industry. This versatile plastic is particularly valued as a sealing medium on the inside. For the outside of a PE bag, however, there are a number of options. While plastic bags with an MDO-PE exterior are recyclable and therefore particularly sustainable, versions made of a plastic composite with a PET exterior are not recyclable. However, this variant offers numerous advantages in further processing.

Maximum protection with special composite materials

For applications with higher barrier and product protection requirements, a particularly resistant special composite, for example made of PE, PET and aluminium, can also be selected. Maximum protection is achieved by metallising the PE film, but laminating and bonding PET and aluminium to the PE carrier also offers a very high level of protection. The most suitable option depends largely on the filling material and other conditions.

HDPE, LDPE and MDO-PE – the differences explained

Not all PE is the same. In fact, this special packaging and film plastic comes in a variety of material qualities. These different PE variants make it possible to tailor packaging precisely to specific requirements – from simple e-commerce packaging to demanding applications in the food industry.

While HDPE (high-density polyethylene) is primarily used for robust and resistant packaging, LDPE (low-density polyethylene) is the first choice for soft, malleable bags that impress with their high flexibility and transparency. In comparison, LLDPE (linear low-density polyethylene) offers improved mechanical properties such as increased tensile strength and puncture resistance, which increases the durability of PE bags made from LLDPE. MDO-PE (modified density polyethylene) combines the advantages of LDPE and LLDPE and delivers a modified form that is both visually appealing and high-performance. In addition, PE bags made from MDO-PE are particularly easy to recycle, making them an extremely sustainable choice.

From flat pouches to Stand up Pouches – an overview of PE bag variants

Whether small or large, flat or upright, PE bags are available in a wide variety of designs at packaging warehouse:

Flat pouches for thin, flat or small items Stand up pouches with viewing window, also known as doypacks, for secure standing and maximum product protection for bulky items Customisable mini PE bags, ideal for cosmetics, food supplements or product samples resealable Ziplock bags with a robust and durable zip lock mechanism that allows the PE bag to be sealed airtight

Metallic PE Doypack

Food, cosmetic samples, electronics – the diverse applications of PE bags

500ml PE Doypacks

PE bags are considered true all-rounders in the packaging industry. While they are used in the food industry to package loose goods ranging from fine tea to premium spice blends, the cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries use these versatile bags to package medicines, care products and medical cannabis. For liquid products such as lotions or oils, PE stand up pouches are used, which are sealed watertight and equipped with integrated openings or sealable valves. Samples produced for marketing purposes can be packaged perfectly in the smallest versions of PE bags. PE bags also play an important role in B2B trade as partially standardised packaging for small parts and components of all kinds.

Experience PE bags in a wide variety of scenarios:

  • Food packaging for loose goods such as coffee, animal feed, tea, dried fruit, spices and herbs
  • Packaging for pet supplies, from bird feed to dog treats
  • Packaging for cosmetic and personal care products such as lotions, creams and make-up
  • Pharmaceutical packaging for medicines, dietary supplements or medical cannabis
  • Industrial and commercial packaging for small parts and spare parts such as screws and wooden beads, but also electronic components and tools
  • Large Flat Pouches for documents and shipping materials
Natural paper, white PE

PE bags – sustainability and recycling

Polyethylene is probably the most widely used standard material for packaging bags on our markets. As a result, the infrastructure for recycling PE bags has developed promisingly in recent years. When a PE bag has reached the end of its life cycle after a long service life and, ideally, frequent reuse, it can be disposed of and recycled properly. However, this is only possible if the sealing medium on the inside and outside of the bag are sorted by type, as is the case, for example, with bags with an outer surface made of MDO-PE. In terms of recyclability, PE bags made of composite materials, for example with PE as the sealing medium on the inside and PET on the outside, fare worse. If you value sustainability and recyclability, you should always pay attention to the material composition when choosing your PE bags and, if possible, avoid certain combinations of PE with other plastics.
